Don Knotts left the show as a series regular, but he returned for a high school reunion episode where he learned Thelma Lou had gotten married. Luckily, Barney wasn’t left alone forever. When a bunch of the cast reunited for a TV movie called “Return to Mayberry” in 1986, Thelma Lou was divorced. And, guess what? Barney and Thelma Lou got married in the movie!

It was pretty sweet! The movie gave fans a chance to see what happened to the Mayberry gang after the show ended. They showed Barney and Thelma Lou getting together after all those years. It was a happy ending for two of our favorite characters.

Though Don Knotts had retired from acting by then, he agreed to do “Return to Mayberry” to give fans one last glimpse of Barney Fife. It’s a fun movie to watch for anyone who loves “The Andy Griffith Show.” You get to see all your favorite characters, and you find out what happens to them after the show ended.
