Who didn’t sing in Sister Act?
The film’s music director, Marc Shaiman, actually brought in a professional singer to hit the high notes for Whoopi. Shaiman said he knew Goldberg’s voice wasn’t as strong for the song’s higher ranges. Instead of trying to force it, they decided to have a professional singer provide the vocal performance for the scene. This made sure the song sounded perfect for the film. It’s a small detail, but it highlights the attention to detail that went into making Sister Act 2 a memorable musical experience.
We can still hear Goldberg’s voice in the movie though! Her spoken parts and harmonies blended perfectly with the professional singer’s performance to create the final version of “Oh Happy Day”. In the end, this little behind-the-scenes secret only added to the magic of the song and movie!
